New Jersey Families Run In Boxers To Spotlight Colon Cancer
Undy 5000 5K Raises Funds for Local Screening Program, Spurs Awareness
(July 23, 2013) Washington, DC – On Saturday, more than 500 colon cancer patients, survivors, caregivers and advocates hit the streets of Pier Village in underwear-themed outfits to participate in the Colon Cancer Alliance’s 4th annual Undy 5000 5K Walk/Run. But this event isn’t just a fun run; in this corky and unconventional way, the Undy 5000 5K is raising awareness and funds to fight colon cancer, the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S.
This year’s event raised more than $60,000 through individual and team participants and local sponsors. A portion of event proceeds will benefit the Colon Cancer Alliance’s local Community Health Partnership Grant partner, helping provide colon cancer screening services to uninsured and underinsuredresidents of Monmouth County.
“To date we’ve helped provide education and screening options to more than 7,000 residents who otherwise would not have had access to this potentially life-saving service,” said Todd Setter, National Director of the Undy 5000 series. “With Saturday’s success, that number will continue to grow. That’s what the Undy 5000 is all about – drawing attention, increasing screening rates and, ultimately, saving lives.”
The Undy 5000 is a one-of-a-kind experience, bringing together hundreds of people who have been affected by colon cancer and giving participants the opportunity to memorialize and honor loved ones. More than 30 colon cancer survivors attended Saturday’s 5K and were honored during the event’s signature survivor ceremony.
A fun twist to a serious topic, the Undy 5000 is one of the many ways the Colon Cancer Alliance is sparking much-needed conversations. Colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, yet nearly 150,000 Americans are estimated to be diagnosed this year alone. People may not want to talk about “that” part of the body, but talking about it just might save a life.
Boehringer Ingelheim, the maker of Dulcolax®*, is the proud presenting sponsor of the 2013 Undy 5000 event series. As the #1 doctor-recommended stimulant for constipation relief, Dulcolax ® reminds everyone over the age of 50 or with a family history of colon cancer, that a colonoscopy can save lives.
