The Colorectal Cancer Alliance has expanded its outreach and support to Spanish-speaking allies with the addition of Marielle McLeod to its staff. Marielle adds bilingual capability to our patient and family support navigator team, who staff the Alliance’s helpline, group support chats, and many outreach events.

Marielle shared her story with us:

I am Marielle McLeod, bilingual patient and family navigator for the Colorectal Cancer Alliance.  I have worked in the healthcare field for the past 11 years. During that time, I was a Spanish medical interpreter for a medical university. It was during my time as an interpreter that I fell in love with being a patient advocate, an educator, and being a champion for those that did not have a voice. I wanted to do more within the healthcare field and went on to obtain my master’s degree in healthcare administration, which allowed me to work for a national hospice company.

A few months after my 36th birthday, I was diagnosed with stage III colorectal cancer. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that it could happen to me. Especially with no family history. During my entire fight, I worked without missing a single day. I look forward to my new role as the bilingual patient and family navigator to bring education through advocacy to our Latino community throughout the country.
