Assistant Director of Development

The Colorectal Cancer Alliance is a national organization committed to ending colorectal cancer within our lifetime. We help patients, families, survivors and caregivers navigate their diagnosis and treatment, connecting them with those who can share experiences and knowledge, address concerns, and identify resources to meet their needs. We partner with healthcare professionals and social influencers to raise awareness of preventative screening, and we collaborate with researchers to better understand the disease and fund critical research.

March Forth is a critical program of the Colorectal Cancer Alliance which focuses resources in geographic areas across the country to shine a light on the importance of preventing colorectal cancer. Starting in Philadelphia, March Forth offers a four-pronged strategy to improve colorectal cancer screening rates to at least 80% of eligible individuals. Implementing this massive outreach campaign aimed at patients, physicians, and the systems they navigate, will result in upwards of an additional 100,000 individuals screened annually, saving hundreds of lives.

The Assistant Director of Development will play a critical role in meeting the two-year goal to raise $5 million for March Forth Philadelphia and a five-year goal to raise $100 million for the Alliance as part of a large-scale mission campaign. The Assistant Director of Development will have responsibility to cultivate, solicit and steward gifts of $10,000 or more from individual, corporate and foundation donors with a particular focus on the Philadelphia market. This position works collaboratively and strategically with the Chief Development Officer, Vice President of Prevention, Director of Individual Giving, Director of Corporate & Foundation Giving and the Major Gifts Officer to build a pipeline of donors, solicit/close major gifts, facilitate cultivation and major donor events and steward donors appropriately. The Assistant Director of Development will report to the Chief Development Officer with a strong working relationship with the Vice President of Prevention. 

Job Duties

  • The Assistant Director of Development will maintain a portfolio of between 100 and 150 major donor prospects who are at various stages of their relationship with the Alliance.

  • The Assistant Director of Development will develop and implement strategies to move individual, corporate and foundation donor prospects through the moves management giving cycle. In addition to face-to-face visits, the Assistant Director of Development will utilize various communication methods such as phone, mail and electronic correspondence to keep donors informed and connected to the Alliance. 

  • The Assistant Director of Development will develop major gift strategies by analyzing the current donor base and by identifying and qualifying donors. 

  • The Assistant Director of Development will lead one-on-one solicitation of gifts of $10,000 or more and will coordinate joint solicitations with the Chief Development Office, Vice President of Prevention and CEO. 

  • The Assistant Director of Development will work in partnership with the Director of Corporate & Foundation Giving to coordinate solicitations of existing industry supporters and foundations. 

  • The Assistant Director of Development will research, cultivate and solicit new industry and foundation funders in both the Philadelphia region and on a national scope. 

  • The Assistant Director of Development will work collaboratively with the Vice President of Prevention to identify the March Forth programmatic initiatives in need of funding and to determine if specific giving initiatives meet the programmatic objectives of the Alliance. 

  • The Assistant Director of Development will develop a stewardship program for individual donors and facilitate recognition efforts/events for individuals, companies and foundation funders to help secure the lasting commitments of donors, including the management of the local and national Leadership Council programs. 

  • The Assistant Director of Development will complete and maintain current data tracking for entire prospect portfolio in Salesforce. This includes timely completion of contact reports, updating prospect stages, next step tasks, and proposals.

  • The Assistant Director of Development will work with other CCA departments when appropriate to cultivate relationships with survivors, family members, and other community stakeholders in order to engage the community around fundraising opportunities for March Forth.

  • The Assistant Director of Development will cultivate relationships with Philadelphia area leaders, including business leaders, health professionals and elected officials.

In the performance of their respective tasks and duties, all employees of the organization are expected to fulfill the following: 

  • Have a general understanding of colorectal cancer prevention and treatment; be an advocate for the Colorectal Cancer Alliance and its mission.

  • Perform quality work within deadlines with or without direct supervision.

  • Interact professionally with other employees, constituents, and vendors.

  • Work effectively as a team contributor on all assignments.

  • Work independently while understanding the necessity for communicating and coordinating work efforts with other employees and organizations.


  • The Assistant Director of Development must have a proven record of accomplishment in the major gifts environment not only in identifying and qualifying major donors, but in soliciting and closing gifts of $10,000 or more from individuals, companies and foundations. 

  • Five to seven years of progressive experience in fundraising. 

  • B.A./B.S. degree required.

  • Knowledgeable of the local philanthropy market  in Philadelphia. 

  • Excellent writing skills.

  • Ability to work independently, exercise professional judgment and discretion.

  • Strong research, analytical, planning, and organizational skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Experience with fundraising database software and wealth screening software. 

  • Team oriented, flexible, positive, personable, and eager to learn.

  • Some travel required.
