This post is a part of the week long Live Your Best Life series in celebration of Survivor Week.
Colon cancer survivors can find comfort in many things: some take up relaxing hobbies, some join support groups and others dedicate themselves to advocacy issues. However for some survivors, spirituality plays a significant role in their new lives.
Although spirituality can take many forms and mean different things to different people, having a spiritual life can be beneficial no matter the practice. And being spiritual doesn’t always mean being religious.
Having clear ideas about the world and life can reduce stress and anxiety. Your spiritual beliefs (along with practices like prayer and meditation) can also bring you peace and help answer some big questions like, “Why is this happening to me” and “What is my purpose?” You may also find comfort and companionship in your spiritual community or by attending services in places of worship.
Spiritual Resources
Leaning on your spiritual beliefs can get you through some difficult times and spiritual practices can even be a positive way to manage stress.
Looking for ways to incorporate spirituality into your life? We’ve put together 5 tips:
- Talk with your spiritual adviser or teacher about survivorship.
- Incorporate spiritual practices like yoga and nature walks into your health and
wellness plan. - Many hospitals have staff chaplains who are trained to help patients and survivors; request to speak to one if you’d like to chat about spirituality.
- Take advantage of your spiritual community to meet people with similar beliefs.
- Join the Blue Hope Nation to learn about spiritual practices that have helped other colon cancer survivors and share some of your own!
