About Me:
My mother, Peggy, died two years ago from stage IV colon cancer at the age of 56. My mother was a fun, outgoing person who worked everyday of her life. To watch this woman suffer and deteriorate from a preventable disease made me so angry. The lack of knowledge and education about colon cancer killed my mother. If I would have known everything I know now about colon cancer then maybe my mother would have got a colonoscopy at 50 and she would be alive today. She could be watching her four adorable grandchildren grow into young adults. I feel so strongly that educating the public about colon cancer will result in less deaths and more prevention. Taking one day out of our busy lives to get a screening is the least we can do to save our own lives. The same year I lost my mother I also lost my father-in law to colon cancer. He was only 52. I don't want this to happen to anyone else. We need to get the message out in the public and let people know how important and deadly this cancer is. My goal is to honor my mother's life by saving other's lives through colon cancer awareness. - Denise McKee, Coordinator of Voices of Tri-Cities
