Colon Cancer Alliance Kicks Off National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month In Times Square By Ringing The Nasdaq Closing Bell
New York, NY (March 8, 2010) -- In recognition of March as Colon Cancer Awareness Month and the efforts of the Colon Cancer Alliance (CCA) to raise awareness of the disease, the CCA rang the NASDAQ closing bell on Tuesday, March 2. Andrew Spiegel, CEO of the Colon Cancer Alliance, presided over the NASDAQ closing ceremony. Joining Spiegel was CCA Board member Michael Zahaby, key CCA members and staff, as well as survivors who were visibly moved by the significance of the event.
"We're excited that the NASDAQ recognized March as Colon Cancer Awareness Month in such a public manner," Spiegel said. "Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S., affecting 1 in 19 Americans. The disease is almost entirely preventable through screening, yet only about half of those who should be tested actually get screened. 50,000 Americans die each year from colorectal cancer and we are now at a critical juncture that requires greater public awareness and support -- NASDAQ's help in increasing awareness was invaluable."
Prior to the closing ceremony, the CCA debuted its new animated public service announcement, "Screen My Colon!"TM The PSA played on the NASDAQ screen in Times Square for a full hour before and after the closing. "Screen My Colon!"TM urges individuals to be proactive in their healthcare by asking their doctors about colorectal cancer screening, the number one way to prevent the disease.
The Colon Cancer Alliance raises awareness of colorectal cancer through its innovative programs and campaigns. The CCA also assists those who are battling the disease by providing patient support and education services and furthering research and advocacy efforts.
