Colon Cancer Alliance To Ring Nasdaq Closing Bell In Recognition Of March As Colon Cancer Awareness Month
New York, NY (March 1, 2010) -- In recognition of March as Colon Cancer Awareness Month and the efforts of the Colon Cancer Alliance (CCA) to raise awareness of the disease, NASDAQ has invited the CCA to ring the closing bell on Tuesday, March 2 at 4:00 p.m. Andrew Spiegel, CEO of the Colon Cancer Alliance, will preside over the NASDAQ closing bell. Joining Spiegel will be the CCA’s Board member Michael Zahaby, key CCA members and staff.
"We're excited that NASDAQ has recognized March as Colon Cancer Awareness Month in such a public manner," Spiegel said. "Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the US, affecting 1 in 19 Americans. The disease is almost entirely preventable through screening, yet only about half of those who should be tested actually get screened. 50,000 Americans die each year from colorectal cancer and we are now at a critical juncture that requires greater public awareness and support -- NASDAQ's assistance is invaluable."
The Colon Cancer Alliance raises awareness of colorectal cancer through innovative programs such as the nationwide Dress in Blue Day and the Undy 5000. Dress in Blue Day takes place on the first Friday of every March and encourages individuals, businesses and community groups to wear blue and start the conversation about the importance of colon cancer screenings. The Undy 5000 is a series of 5K runs designed to draw attention to "that" area of the body by providing all participants with commemorative boxer shorts. In addition, The CCA provides information and patient support services to hundreds of thousands each year.
The NASDAQ OMX Group, Inc. is the world's largest exchange company. It delivers trading, exchange technology and public company services across six continents, with over 3,800 listed companies.
