Striking Out Colon Cancer in Memory of Coach Weaver
Softball had always served as a huge part of Coach Dave Weaver’s life. For over 30 years, he coached players and teams across the country and founded the New England Catching Camp in 1994. When Coach Weaver lost his battle with colon cancer in June 2011, his family, friends, and players decided to honor him with the First Annual Dave Weaver Memorial Softball Game in Nashua, New Hampshire.
The game was between Bishop Guertin and Hollis Brookline High Schools, and lead off with Bishop Guertin’s Jenna Levalle singing the national anthem as Weaver’s son, Jay, threw out the first pitch to begin the game. During the course of the day, there were many baseball-themed activities to enjoy, including chuck-a-tennis-ball, mascot race, and homerun derby for fans and players. The day culminated in the epic softball game in which Bishop Guertin, coached by Myia Yates, beat Hollis Brookline with a score of 11-9. Snacks and music were also provided as everyone in attendance enjoyed their day paying homage to the game to which Dan Weaver devoted much of his life.
The First Annual Dave Weaver Memorial Softball game was a huge success, raising over $1,000 to provide hope and support to patients through the Colon Cancer Alliance. Congratulations to Bishop Guertin and Hollis Brookline on a game well played!
