Running to Remember: Steph’s Fall 5K
Stephanie Godri-Johnston always aspired to go above and beyond conventional expectation. As a doting daughter, sister, wife and mother, she not only cared for her family but also helped her country and community. She cared for returning soldiers, collected supplies for those less fortunate and helped everyone in between. As an active runner, she took her health seriously. When digestive problems plagued her periodically for over a year, she knew something was wrong. No one ever expected a seemingly young and healthy woman to be diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer at age 29.
After bravely and valiantly fighting her disease for 18 months, Stephanie passed away in May 2012. To honor her charitable spirit and love of running, her family and friends created the First Annual Steph’s Fall 5K held in Forty Fort, PA on October 27, 2012. Hundreds came out for the timed 5K race and raised thousands of dollars in Stephanie’s name. Proceeds were divided between the Stephanie Godri-Johnston Memorial Scholarship and the Colon Cancer Alliance’s Blue Note Fund, which gives one-time financial grants to patients in active treatment for colon cancer. In its inaugural year, Steph’s Fall 5K raised an impressive $1,500 for the Blue Note Fund and has an even larger goal planned for 2013.
Thank you to the Godri and Johnston families for their hard work and dedication! The Colon Cancer Alliance is proud to partner with Steph’s Fall 5K again in 2013. If you have an interesting idea for a fundraiser, please contact Alison Ornitz at 202-628-0123 ex. 109 for more information.
