Miles for a Cause: Mike’s Team
On Sunday, April 1, “Mike’s Team” participated in the Santa Cruz Half Marathon & 10K to raise funds and awareness on behalf of the Colon Cancer Alliance (CCA). But for Mike, his wife Emily and his friend Brian, this was more than just another race. Mike is undergoing treatment for colon cancer. Brian and Mike enjoy running, and had often talked about running in an event together. After Mike's diagnosis, they were determined to form a team and raise critical funds and awareness about colon cancer.
In the last few weeks leading up to the race, Mike was concerned whether or not he'd even be able to finish the 10K because his recent treatments were very difficult to get through. Finish it he did, and with an impressive time of 51 minutes and 12 seconds, which is running at a pace of just over 8 minutes per mile. Congratulations, Mike, on finishing in the top 12% of 10K runners and for being an inspiration throughout your training and treatment!
Emily and Brian participated in the half marathon portion of the race and finished with impressive times, as well. Emily crossed the finish line in 448th place out of 1437 female runners and Brian crossed the finish line in 355th place out of 2391 total runners – way to go!
Beyond their exciting finishing times, they surpassed their goals of raising funds and awareness by running the race in Colon Cancer Alliance shirts and setting up a fundraising web page for “Mike’s Team”. With the support of friends and family, they surpassed their fundraising goal and raised an impressive $3,540 to support CCA programs and services.
The Colon Cancer Alliance salutes Mike, Emily and Brian for their support.
