Going the Distance to Fight Colon Cancer
A love of sports runs in Dan Markovich’s family.
Dan’s father, Joe, played on three sports teams in college after receiving a football scholarship to Wabash College. Joe instilled this athleticism in his children, encouraging Dan and his brothers get involved in team sports while growing up. Joe trained with his sons throughout middle and high school, solidifying sports as a large part of their lives. Best of all, he was a proud father cheering his sons on from the sidelines at their various sporting events.
Dan dreamed of training with his dad to run the Charlottesville Marathon. Even though Joe was battling colon cancer, Joe refused to back down from the challenge. He continually insisted he was only weeks from getting back on his feet. Unfortunately, Joe passed away right before the marathon. To honor his father, Dan persisted in running the Charlottesville Marathon on April 7th, 2012, completing the race in 3 hours, 43 minutes. In addition, Dan raised more than $1,500 to support the Colon Cancer Alliance.
Congratulations, Dan, on a race well-run and on surpassing your fundraising goal. We know Joe would have been incredibly proud.
