Crabbing for a Cause
On a typical searing, summer day in Hoboken, New Jersey, Max Bracero could be found crabbing, listening to salsa music, playing dominoes or spending time with his friends and family at the Hoboken Piers. Unfortunately, the last time Max was able to spend the day crabbing was August 29, 2010, exactly a year before he passed away from colon cancer.
Max’s daughter, Nilda, and her siblings proved their strength and resilience when they challenged this adversity; the siblings created a Blue Star Tribute on the Colon Cancer Alliance (CCA) website as a way to honor their late father. But the family didn’t stop there.
On August 29, 2012, Max’s children held the “Max Bracero Crabbing for Cancer Memorial Fundraiser” at the Hoboken Piers, where family, friends and members of the community celebrated Max’s life by spending the day sharing in all of his favorite pastimes: crabbing, listening to salsa music, playing dominoes and spending time with loved ones.
Proceeds from the event benefited the CCA’s Blue Note Fund program. This unique CCA program provides one-time grants of $300 to colon cancer patients in active treatment. Along with the $3,770 the Bracero family raised at the memorial fundraiser, they also created the Team Max Bracero Memorial Fund for the Jersey Shore Undy 5000 and raised more than $1,500 to support CCA programs and services!
The CCA would like to sincerely thank and congratulate the Bracero Family for finding a meaningful and unique way to honor their father while helping others in their fight against colon cancer.
