Boston Scientific and the Colon Cancer Alliance Team Up to Develop a New Screening Assistance Program
Boston Scientific is a global medical device company headquartered in Natick, MA, dedicated to transforming lives through innovative medical solutions that improve the health of patients around the world. The company is committed to generating awareness about colorectal cancer and the importance of early detection, particularly among populations who are at high risk for the disease.
In support of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in March, Boston Scientific employees in Massachusetts purchased colorectal cancer awareness pins to raise money for the Colon Cancer Alliance (CCA). Boston Scientific employees wore the pins in March to show their support while raising $20,000 to benefit the CCA. The money will be used to develop a new colorectal cancer screening assistance program. In addition, Boston Scientific representatives have joined the CCA screening assistance program advisory board.
In addition to fundraising, Boston Scientific spearheaded several activities in March 2013 to generate awareness about colorectal cancer. Some of these efforts included: sponsoring a public service announcement in New York City’s Times Square that was seen by more than an estimated one million people, collaborating with an endoscopy center in Dallas to provide free screenings for high risk, uninsured patients, as well as hosting internal events to educate its employees.
One of the events that Boston Scientific hosted at its Marlborough, MA location featured a gastroenterologist who spoke about the importance of getting a colonoscopy, and two CCA volunteers who are currently being treated for colon cancer shared their stories. Several Boston Scientific employees in a high risk category scheduled colonoscopies as a result of the event.
Boston Scientific looks forward to continuing to work with the CCA to increase awareness and access to screenings.
