Myths & Facts about Colorectal Cancer is a compact 48-page booklet allowing reader to quickly understand the fundamentals of colorectal cancer (CRC). This booklet was written in 1998 by Drs. Richard Padzur and Melanie Royce of M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Myths & Facts about Colorectal Cancer explains what colorectal cancer is, what causes it, as well as how CRC is detected, diagnosed, and treated. The booklet gives suggestions for appropriate follow-up care and offers advice on how to cope with CRC. This booklet is a part of a series that addresses common misperceptions about various diseases and provides accurate information to address these myths. For example, one myth that is addressed is that "Colon cancer affects only older people." It explains that, in fact, while "the median age at which colorectal cancer occurs is 62 years, the risk of developing colon cancer starts rising at age 40. There are cases of younger patients with no known risk factors who develop colon cancer before the age of 40."
My favorite part of Myths & Facts about Colorectal Cancer is what distinguishes it from many other publications - the many wonderful color pictures it contains. There are illustrations of the anatomy of the colon and the organs surrounding it, photos of the inside of a normal colon and one containing a polyp, a pictorial representation of the distinguishing characteristics of the various stages of CRC, and an illustration of the lymph system of the colon. In addition, Myths & Facts contains a 3-page glossary of terms used in discussing CRC and Appendices listing resources and groups that conduct treatment research.
With a quick reading of Myths & Facts about Colorectal Cancer, one can learn a great deal about colorectal cancer. Its easy to understand language and detailed illustrations make Myths & Facts about Colorectal Cancer a must read for one starting a journey with this disease.
