Key Health Agencies To Receive Increase in Funding -- Big Impact for Colon Cancer Screening

February 27, 2009

This week, Congress took an FY09 omnibus appropriations bill that will provide an increase in the annual budgets of the NIH, NCI, and CDC Division of Cancer Prevention and Control. Under the omnibus bill, being voted on in the House this Wednesday, the CDC cancer programs will receive $340 million, a 10 percent increase over FY08. This includes $38.9 million for colorectal cancer screening and education, a $25 million increase intended to expand colorectal screening across the country.

NIH will receive $30.3 billion in FY09, a 3.2 percent over FY08. NCI will receive $4.97 billion, a 2.8 percent increase over FY08. Additionally, the HRSA Patient Navigator Program will receive $4 million in FY09. The FDA will receive $2.04 billion in appropriated funds in FY09, $325 million more than in FY08. The CDC, NIH, FDA and HRSA appropriations bill passed the House, now it needs to pass the Senate. Let your Senator know how important this is to your community.

Last week, the President signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Under this stimulus package, the NIH will receive approximately $10.4 billion for use in fiscal years(FY) 2009 and 2010, $8.2 billion of which is specifically tagged for research. Source: OVAC
