History
The Colon Cancer Alliance was founded in 1999 by a group of 42 individuals out of the need to promote public awareness about colorectal cancer (CRC) and provide support for those affected by the disease.
Though it began as a simple online support group, the passion and vision of those involved established an organization that now encompasses the United States and parts of Canada. Moved by the 1998 National March to Conquer Cancer, and the sudden death of integral founder Marshall Kragen, the group intensified their efforts. CCA was formally founded with the help of major memorial contributions and fundraising.
A volunteer workgroup of survivors, caregivers, and friends, communicating by e-mail and meeting in chat rooms, created the name, the logo and the mission, as well as the legal and administrative framework for the international organization, providing the basis for all current CCA communications.
The first annual meeting of CCA was held in Washington, D.C. in March, 1999. Shortly thereafter, a board of directors was appointed and a committee structure put in place for the workgroup of volunteers.
