2009 Board of Directors
CCA's Board of Directors is comprised of highly capable, dedicated individuals with backgrounds in business, education, non-profit management, health care, cancer research, law and finance. In addition to their professional expertise, each board member has in some way been touched by colorectal cancer. Having a personal understanding of colorectal cancer and its impacts deepens their commitment to helping others affected by the disease — and to one day finding a cure.
Michael Zahaby, Board Chairperson and Treasurer
Mr. Zahaby is the Chief Credit Officer and EVP of New York based Amalgamated Bank. Michael was a caregiver to his wife of 27 years in her two-year fight against colon cancer. He received a bachelor’s degree in Finance from Ohio State University and an MBA in International Management from The Thunderbird School of Global Management. He previously served on the board of The Southeast Pennsylvania United Way and chaired many of the board’s committees and sub-committees on funds allocation and children’s issues. Prior to Amalgamated, Michael was a senior officer of Morgan Stanley CFS, Inc., Merrill Lynch BFS, and CoreStates/First Union Banks. He intends to dedicate his efforts to raising awareness of colon cancer in memory of his late wife, Sharon.
John Daly, MD, FACS, FRCS (G), FRCS (I), Board Member
Dr. Daly is the Dean of the Temple University School of Medicine and is internationally known as a surgeon, researcher, author and academician. During his career, Dr. Daly has been involved with a variety of organizations including the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery, the American Cancer Society and the American Surgical Society. Dr. Daly has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards for teaching, research and practice including the Sam E. Roberts Nutrition Foundation Medal of the University of Kansas (1981) and the Elliot Hochstein Medical Student Teaching Award of Cornell University (1995). He has also been included on many "best" lists such as Best Doctors in Philadelphia, Best Doctors in America and Top Cancer Doctors in New York. He is an active research investigator with over 15 years of NIH funding.
James W. Fleshman, MD, Board Member
Dr. Fleshman is a Professor of Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO and the Chief of the Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery at the Siteman Cancer Center. Additionally, he is the Co-Director of GI Center, Clinical Operations. Dr. Fleshman's specialties include Crohn's Disease, Colon & Rectal Surgery, Colon and Rectal Cancer and Inflammatory Bowel Disease. He received his bachelor’s and medical degrees from Washington University. Dr. Fleshman serves as the President of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, and has been listed in Best Doctors in America, 2002 - 2008 (Best Doctors, Inc) and America's Top Doctors, Castle Connolly Medical Ltd, 2002 - 2008.
Joseph A. Frick, Board Member
Mr. Frick is the President and CEO of Independence Blue Cross. Prior to his position with Independence Blue Cross, Mr. Frick was Vice President of Human Resources at Philadelphia Newspapers, Inc. (PNI), which publishes The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News. In October 2008, Mr. Frick completed a two-year term as Chairman of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. He currently serves on the Boards of the Chamber and of its CEO Council for Growth. In addition, he is a member of the Boards of the Philadelphia Orchestra and La Salle University in Philadelphia. Nationally, he serves on the Boards of Directors for the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association and America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP). A Liberal Arts graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Mr. Frick also received an MBA in Management from Loyola College. He and his wife, Amy, live in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. They have a son, Tony, and a daughter, Kate.
Leonard Jacob, Board Member
Prior to joining the CCA, Dr. Jacob served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Sangen Pharmaceutical Company and as a consultant to various biotechnology companies. He served as Chief Operating Officer of Genaera Corporation (formerly Magainin Pharmaceuticals, Inc.) from 1989 to 1996. From 1980 to 1988, Dr. Jacob was employed by SmithKline and French Laboratories, where he served as Worldwide Vice President and a member of SmithKline Beecham's Corporate Management Committee. Dr. Jacob currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Antares Pharma, Inc. He also devotes his time to Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, a non-profit service organization for the visually and learning disabled, and Saving Face, a non-profit organization for facially disfigured children.
Charlie Kelley, Board Member
Originally from Maryland, this four-time Grammy nominated producer, musician and artist attended Boston's prestigious Berklee College of Music before moving to Nashville, Tennessee in 1990. He quickly established himself on Music Row and has performed as a guitarist for Keith Urban, Rebecca Lynn Howard, Bryan White, Michael English and Jameson Clark among others. He has performed on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Grand Ole Opry Live and Prime Time Country as well as other national programs in the U.S. and overseas. In 2002, Charlie formed Donelson Ranch Productions and took the helm as producer for accordionist, LynnMarie. In December 2008, Charlie underwent surgery at Centennial Medical Center after malignant polyps were discovered in a routine examination. Charlie, one half of the duo The Boxhounds with accordion player LynnMarie, learned during his recovery that he had been nominated for his fourth Grammy and first as both a producer and recording artist. "A Grammy nomination is thrilling, and for it to come at a time in my life when the spotlight can not only be on the music but on the importance of early screenings is truly exciting for me. It saved my life, and to be able to share my story and my music makes this nomination extra special."
Kevin Lewis, Co-Founder and Board Member
A carrier of the HNPCC (hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer) gene, Mr. Lewis has had several family members who have died or suffered from colon cancer. He follows an extensive prevention regime designed to reduce his probability of developing a malignant tumor. He supports the National Cancer Institute by serving as a Patient Advocate on several programs at the National Cancer Institute Mr. Lewis is a Director and Partner at PRTM Management Consultants, providing strategic operations expertise to technology-based clients. He has an MBA from Harvard Business School and an engineering degree from the University of Pennsylvania. His extensive corporate experience includes Raytheon, Teradyne, AMD, Boston Scientific Corporation, Schering Plough, IBM, and Alcatel Lucent, as well as Infolibria, an Internet startup company.
Michael Retsky, PhD., Board Member
A highly regarded researcher in the field of breast cancer, Dr. Retsky was Lecturer in Surgery at Harvard Medical School on Judah Folkman's staff for 12 years until Dr. Folkman’s untimely death in 2008. Dr. Retsky is currently a Visiting Scientist at Harvard School of Public Health. His research field is computer simulation of cancer and angiogenesis. Dr. Retsky is a 15-year survivor of stage III colon cancer, and he designed his own long-term, low-dose chemotherapy regimen, known as metronomic chemotherapy. He received a PhD in physics from the University of Chicago and is currently manager of Electron Optics Development Co., LLC. He is also on the Board of Connecticut Optics and Photonics Association.
Sandy White, Board Secretary and Liaison to the Advocacy Committee
Diagnosed in 1993, Ms. White is a colon cancer survivor. She is a product management consultant for Allstate Insurance Company in Pennsylvania and has lobbied on Capitol Hill for increased funding to assist with eradicating colorectal cancer. Ms. White also developed a workshop on personal advocacy that was offered at the American Cancer Society's Survivors' Conference in November 2000. She also produced Cancer Matters, a cable television series that focused on cancer-related issues for survivors and caregivers. Ms. White was featured on the Today Show during Colorectal Cancer Awareness month in March 2000.
