FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Colon Cancer Alliance Designated Official Patient Support Partner for Katie Couric's NCCRA
New York March 8, 2000 The Colon Cancer Alliance (CCA) has been designated by The National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance (NCCRA) as its official patient support partner. CCA provides a toll-free Helpline (1-877-422-2030) and a website (www.CCAlliance.org) that offers support services and educational materials for those touched by colorectal cancer - patients, family, and friends. CCA is dedicated to bringing the voice of survivors to battle colorectal cancer through patient support, education, research and advocacy.
The National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance (NCCRA), was founded by Katie Couric, Lilly Tartikoff and the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) to raise research dollars targeted at the development of cutting-edge colorectal cancer prevention and treatment. "We are excited about the opportunity to partner with the Colon Cancer Alliance. They provide outstanding support services for people who have colorectal cancer through their buddy system, Helpline, newsletter, booklets, and website," said Lisa C. Paulsen, President and CEO of the Entertainment Industry Foundation.
CCA Chair, Julian Sheffield says, "The Colon Cancer Alliance is delighted to extend our support and information services to those who contact NCCRA and to work with NCCRA to increase public awareness of colorectal cancer." CCA representatives joined Katie Couric at the press conference in New York City announcing the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance's official launch on March 1st, the first day of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.
The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates that in the United States in 2000 approximately 130,200 men and women will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer and 56,300 people will die from the disease. Colorectal cancer includes cancers of the colon, rectum, anus and appendix. Despite its high incidence, colorectal cancer is one of the most detectable, and if found early enough, most treatable forms of cancer. Over 90% of those diagnosed while the cancer is still localized survive more than five years. Currently, however, only 37% of colorectal cancers are detected at this early stage.
The Colon Cancer Alliance is committed to ending the suffering brought about by colorectal cancer and to providing support and information for survivors and caregivers. CCA has declared war on colorectal cancer and invites any and all organizations, government agencies, members of the medical community, and individuals to join in their determination to eradicate colorectal cancer. Information on CCA membership, support and information services, and sponsorship opportunities is available at www.CCAlliance.org, or by calling (877) 422-2030.
